My love for baking started as a child. I cherish the moments of watching my mom create wonderful pies and and helping her make cookies. She baked with love, and the taste reflected it! Little did she know that she was setting the stage for my future and how I would create my baked goods with love!
From sales, to event coordinator, to marketing manager to real estate agent; my career path has always centered around business. I knew someday I would own my own business, I just never knew exactly what that business would be.
In 2004 I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease, changing the way I view food and nutrition, and paving the way to Sweet Q's Creations. I advocate a healthy lifestyle and nutritious eating habits, but understand there is a sweet-tooth in all of us! Everyone, whether they live gluten-free or not, will enjoy my creations. At Sweet Q's, we make great tasting foods that also happen to be gluten-free!

Sweet Q's products are manufactured in a facility that also produces gluten. How do you keep everything gluten-free?
Yes, Sweet Q's Creations rents a facility space where gluten-containing foods are also present. No other baking is conducted on Sweet Q's baking days. This reduces the chances of flour being in the air. Before any gluten-free baking is started, a thorough cleaning of the kitchen takes place. This is a documented step-by-step process that we have verified to output a gluten-free product. Sweet Q's stores all its supplies and ingredients in a separate storage space in the facility, away from gluten-containing supplies and ingredients. Sweet Q's uses it own mixer, pans and baking utensils which remain gluten-free. In addition to complete care in the kitchen space before and during baking, we produce our creations using certified gluten-free flours. We bake with care in mind.

We use real ingredients and prepare the products in small batches with care. We will make you say, "I like Q!"
Why are there not more creations containing chocolate?
In addition to having Celica disease, I am also allergic to chocolate. Actually, this is my worst allergy! Not having the control of tasting the products being marketed is difficult. In the future we plan to have more products containing chocolate.
I was just diagnosed with Celiac Disease and I don't know what I can eat!
Focus on the foods that you CAN eat. Think about the exterior aisles of a grocery store: Fruits, Vegetables, Nuts/Seeds, Dairy Products, Eggs and Meats. Do most of your grocery shopping here. Then venture to the inside aisles. Become an expert on reading labels. Know what ingredients may contain hidden gluten (see list below). New labeling laws have made it easier to detect gluten in products, but do not use this as a crutch. Examine all ingredients. In no time you will become a pro at shopping and reading labels.
The biggest shift for me when I was diagnosed with Celiac was that it forced me to start cooking most of my meals instead of the convenient habit of eating out all the time. This scares most people that live gluten-free, but I embraced it! Our family meals are gluten-free and healthy. I know exactly what my family is eating by cooking our meals. Nothing beats a good home-cooked meal!
I have control of cooking my own foods at home, but how can I possibly eat out?
Do your homework before leaving the house and ask lots of questions. I typically check a restaurant's website and/or call them directly. When I arrive I alert both the hostess and server of my special diet. I am kind and polite, but very firm about my need to eat gluten-free. If the server is unaware of what gluten is, I give him or her a short lesson in gluten avoidance and give specific examples (putting toast on a plate of breakfast foods, croutons on salads, breadsticks in our around a soup bowl, foods that are fried in the same oil as gluten-containing foods, preparing gluten-free foods in the same area as gluten-containing foods, etc).
I don't have time to prepare gluten-free meals during the work week!
You can cook a casserole or two on the weekend, then spoon out individual portion sizes for meals later on in the week. Freeze them if you will not eat them within a few days. Another tip is to make a larger quantity of oatmeal on Monday (using certified gluten-free rolled oats), then store it in the refrigerator for the week, warming-up only what you need for the morning. This will provide a quick, nutritious breakfast.
In the future, I plan to offer frozen breakfast wraps for a quick nutrition meal alternative.
If you work in an office or cubical, put a personal refrigerator in your space (if possible) so you can have supplies to make sandwiches for lunch meals. Just be certain your deli meats are gluten-free (just ask the person at the deli to view the packaging to ensure it is gluten-free). Having your own refrigerator will ensure no one will double-dip into your food containers (mayo, peanut butter, butter, mustard, etc).
What do I do about toasting bread at home when other family members eat gluten-containing breads?
In our house we use a 4-slot toaster for our family of three. Two of the slots are dedicated gluten-free only. The toaster gets wiped down after use to ensure the gluten crumbs are removed.
Or you could have a separate toaster for gluten-free toast, pulling it out on an as-needed basis.
Is buckwheat flour gluten-free?
Yes, buckwheat flour is gluten-free. It is not a grain at all, rather it is related to the rhubarb plant. Its seeds are ground up into flour. It just has an unfortunate name.
Is it safe to consume vinegar?
When I was diagnosed, everywhere I read experts said to stay away from vinegar and products which contained vinegar. Now they are singing a new tune on this one (and so was I)! Vinegar is safe to eat. The gluten molecules are caught in the distillation process rendering vinegar safe.
What about "Malt Vinegar"?
Read labels carefully. If you see malt vinegar, it is not safe. Malt is made from barley, therefore it is not gluten-free.
I miss having a beer with my pizza, do you know of any gluten-free beer?
